A Saint For Our Times...Saint John Eudes
On Tuesday, August 19th we celebrated the Liturgical Feast of St. John Eudes, our Patron of the Eudist Priests. We are so proud of his legacy and testimony as a missionary of Christ. May this description of his life help us to grow in our desire for holiness.
John Eudes was born in Ri, France in a rural home. He had two brothers and four sisters.
Around his time, there was a great decline in religion, morality and society. There were civil wars all over. The government had forgotten its duty towards the common good of the people, and the country; and the environment was that of squander, luxury, titles for the high class and total poverty among the people. The life of the religious (priest, brothers, bishops, etc.) was also inundated with a spirit far away from Christian life and commitment to the poor.
Nevertheless, like all difficult and dark times, daring men rise and attack and change the way of life. John Eudes quickly understood what his job was and he was not afraid to do it. He became a priest and was one of the best. He got together with other priests and founded the order of the Eudist Priests. During his life, he developed 177 missions. He had a pleasant nature, powerful voice, rich imagination, clear and ardent voice which captivated cowards, and that is why he was known as a “lion” when he preached and “lamb” when he heard confessions.
It was never doubted he helped regions hit by sickness which, back then, did not have the medicines we have today. He confronted the plague, living in a barrel for two years, protected by God and assisting the dying. He had strong character, he was not afraid of difficulties, or of sleeping in unsuitable places. He was stubborn and perseverant with what he was out to get. Cities, towns and rural areas were witnesses of the fire he had in his heart. The churches were too small for the multitudes that came to listen to him and humble themselves at the Lord’s feet. His teachings were taken from the Gospel and penetrated the hearts of those who listened to him.
He was a man in love with Jesus and Mary; he knew his time and worked for its transformation, inspired by the Holy Spirit. He worked for the renovation of the faith of the Christian people. History scholars tell us that if we put together the time he dedicated to the missions, it would take 10 years of uninterrupted evangelization.
Fill your heart with the fire of love
and the ardent wish of your glory.
